TCC-CPAFFC Forum on US-China Relations

The Carter Center

Dr. Nong Hong attended the 6th TCC-CPAFFC Forum on US-China Relations at the Carter Center on December 7, 2017. She assessed that the South China Sea no longer appears to be the driving issue in U.S.-China relations, as it had been since 2010. Other pressing matters, such as the crisis on the Korean peninsula have overshadowed the South China Sea, but it is a significant problem that has not gone away. Until the fundamental disagreements are resolved diplomatically, it will be close to impossible to significantly improve the overall overall relationship between the United States and China.
