ICAS visits the German Institute for International and Secuirty Affairs (SWP) Brussels Office

On June 11, representatives from the Institute for China-America Studies (ICAS), the Institute for China-Europe Studies (ICES), and the Huayang Institute for Research on Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance visited the Brussels Office of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) for an exchange of views on international affairs and China-Europe relations.

The visiting delegation included Dr. Wu Shicun, Chairman of ICAS’ Advisory Board and Chairman of the Huayang Institute for Research on Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance; Dr. Nong Hong, Executive Director and Senior Fellow of ICAS; and Yang Li, Executive Director of ICES.

Additional participants from ICAS included Sourabh Gupta, Senior Fellow, and Zhangchen Wang, Research Associate.

The delegation was received by Dr. André Härtel, Head of SWP’s Brussels Office; Dr. Nadine Godehardt, Senior Associate; and Dorothée Falkenberg, Programme Manager.

The discussion covered a broad range of issues related to global governance, European security, and China-Europe relations. Participants exchanged views on China’s role in global governance and discussed Germany’s approach toward China, including German perspectives on geoeconomics and Chinese economic policy. The conversation also examined current challenges facing China-Europe economic and trade relations and explored differing understandings of strategic competition and economic security and national security within the European policy context.

In addition, participants discussed the future trajectory of U.S.-China relations from a European perspective and the potential impact of upcoming U.S. midterm elections on transatlantic and global politics.
