Biden Administration International Affairs Personnel Tracker

Jonathan Finer

Deputy National Security Advisor

Jonathan Finer serves directly under Jake Sullivan as his Deputy National Security Advisor. Formerly a foreign and national correspondent at the Washington Post, he joined the Obama administration in 2009 as a White House Fellow, leading him to eventually serve as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy. Finer was initially assigned to the Office of the White House Chief of Staff for John Kerry and the National Security Council Staff. His experience in the White House culminated in his appointment as Special Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa and Foreign Policy Speechwriter for then-Vice President Joe Biden.

On China

During his time with The Washington Post, Jon Finer spent much of his time in the Middle East and also covered conflicts related to Russia. He is not on social media and does not have a clear position on China at this time, but given that he has previously had close working relationships with Jake Sullivan and other Obama era staff that are on the Biden team, it can be inferred that he likely falls relatively in line with these individuals.
