Don Graves

Deputy Secretary of Commerce

Don Graves is Deputy Secretary of Commerce since May 14, 2021. Graves served as the executive director of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness during the Obama administration and was previously appointed by President Obama to lead the federal government’s efforts in the recovery of the city of Detroit. From 2014 to 2017, he served as the deputy assistant to President Obama and Counselor to Vice President Biden, providing advice on domestic and economic policy. Graves served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Small Business, Community Development and Housing Policy at the U.S. Department of the Treasury from 2010 to 2014. He was also the U.S. Federal representative to the G7 Task Force on Social Impact Investment.

Until September 2020, Graves was executive vice president and the head of corporate responsibility and community relations at KeyBank. He was the director of public policy for the Business Roundtable 1999-2005.

On China

Given his experiences with small business and community development, Graves can provide a unique perspective to the domestic impact of Trump’s U.S.-China trade war. At this time, Graves appears to have no clear opinion on China or U.S.-China relations.
