Executive Director Dr. Nong Hong, Research Associate Yilun Zhang, and Advisory Board Member Gordon Houlden attended the 6th Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance held in Sanya, China on December 10-12, 2025. The event is organized by the China-Southeast Asia Research Center on the South China Sea, and co-organized by Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance.
Dr. Nong Hong presented on the Session 2 Panel titled “Managing Maritime Disputes: Regional Practices and International Experience.” Prof. Gordon Houlden moderated Session 4, “Sustaining Peace in the South China Sea: Geopolitics and the Construction of Regional Order” held on December 10. Mr. Yilun Zhang was on the Session 7 Panel titled “Global Ocean Governance: Models and Pathways” on December 11.
About the Symposium
Huayang Center for Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance, in collaboration with the National Institute for South China Sea Studies, China Oceanic Development Foundation, Hainan Institute for Free Trade Port Studies, and CGTN, jointly hosted the Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance in Sanya from December 10 to 12, 2025.
This event convened over 300 participants, including experts, scholars, government officials, foreign diplomats to China, as well as representatives from international organizations, maritime sectors, and media institutions from nearly 30 countries and regions worldwide. The symposium featured seven sessions: Building a Stable and Sustainable Global Ocean Governance System, Managing Maritime Disputes: Regional Practices and International Experience, Striving for Maritime Strength: Blue Partnerships and the Development of Hainan Free Trade Port, Sustaining Peace in the South China Sea: Geopolitics and the Construction of Regional Order, Climate Change and Marine Ecological Conservation, Security of Sea Lanes and Submarine Infrastructure, and Global Ocean Governance: Models and Pathways. Additionally, the symposium included a special seminar themed Hainan FTP: Leveraging the 15th Five-Year Plan to Co-create a China-ASEAN Blue Economy Common Market.
