Visit by National Institute for South China Sea Studies Scholars with ICAS Staff

On Thursday, December 14, 2023, three scholars from the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCSS) visited with ICAS scholars to discuss a variety of current topics in U.S.-China relations.

The NISCSS delegation was led by Mr. Wang Sheng (President, NISCSS), who was accompanied by Dr. Ding Duo (Deputy Director, Research Center for Oceans Law and Policy, NISCSS) and Dr. Hu Xin (Assistant Research Fellow, Research Center for Maritime Economy, NISCSS).

The discussion was led by Dr. Nong Hong (Executive Director & Head, Maritime Affairs Program, ICAS) and included Mr. Sourabh Gupta (Senior Fellow & Head, Trade ‘n Technology Program, ICAS) and Ms. Jessica Martin (Research Associate & Manager, Maritime Affairs Program, ICAS).

Ranging a wide range of subject matters, the conversation included the exchange of perspectives and opinions on: China-Philippine interactions and activities around the Second Thomas Shoal in the South China Sea; the value and outcomes of the Biden-Xi meeting held in November; the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and their individual relationships with the EU and NATO; evaluations of Japan’s military strategy and capabilities; and the importance of encouraging people-to-people exchanges, especially in younger generations and on subject matters that can benefit all people such as climate restoration.
