The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) faces a double crisis triggered by traditional and non-traditional security issues. While the traditional security issues exemplified by disputes over the South China Sea and the Mekong River are ongoing and unsettled, Southeast Asia is also shaken by nontraditional security issues such as migration and environmental challenges which are aggravated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and Myanmar crisis. These crises pose a challenge to the traditional ASEAN Way of consultation and consensus, and the non-interference principle.
Join the co-sponsors on June 10 and 11 from 8:30 – 11:40 AM ICT (June 9 and 10 from 9:30 PM – 12:40 AM EST) for an in-depth workshop seeking to examine existing response mechanisms, reconsider how their response strategies, reconsider the effectiveness of the ASEAN Way, and explore a new framework for addressing traditional and non-traditional security concerns.
